Shrinking Fibroids
Why a Biomedical Engineer stopped waiting for a miracle and started looking at the data
If you’ve searched for information on uterine fibroids, you’ve likely been bombarded with articles, teas, and claims of "shrinking fibroids". As a Biomedical Engineer and Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (NTP) who lived through a "cauliflower uterus" and 18 surgical removals, I’m here to offer a perspective rooted in scientific rigour, not conjecture.
The Myth vs. The Science of Shrinking Fibroids
After my diagnosis, in a state of total panic and confusion, I fell prey to the online claims. I tried castor oil packs, fasting, and every herb imaginable. Dandelion root? Check. Burdock root? Check. Milk Thistle? Check. Vegan diet? More on that later. But as I deepened my studies in Nutritional Therapy, the science didn't align with the claims.
1. Cysts vs. Fibroids: Why the distinction matters
In the world of medical imaging, which is part of the training for a Biomedical Engineer, we often see these types of growths:
- Fluid-filled cysts: These can often fluctuate in size or "shrink" as fluid is reabsorbed.
- Uterine Fibroids (Leiomyomas): These are dense, fibrous tumors. They are solid masses of muscle and extracellular matrix.
Dense fibrous material does not simply "shrink" or get "spirited away". While you can manage symptoms, which you can clearly feel and signs, which can be observed by a third party - this is the distinction between signs and symptoms in Nutritional Therapy. One can perhaps slow the growth through metabolic health, a 5cm solid mass is a structural reality.
2. The "Shrinking Violet" Fallacy
When I was in my late teens, I had the first benign tumour removed from my breast. My gynaecologist showed it to me in a glass jar. It didn't look soft. It was a tough and solid mass.
When I later developed uterine fibroids, I could feel them during yoga, like lying face-down on a hard tennis ball. By the time I had surgery, I was carrying three grapefruit-sized fibroids and 15 plums. Together, they were equivalent to a 6-month pregnancy.
Why Biohacking is Better Than "Shrinking"
During my fibroid journey, I was an Engineering Consultant in London, who had to prepare for a slew of useless professional exams, driven by the insane industry that I used to work in. I couldn't afford the brain fog or the debilitating fatigue that often accompanies fibroids.
I stopped looking for a "magic bullet" to shrink the masses and started focusing on Health Optimization and Biohacking. This is what saved my life and job.
How I Optimized My Health (6 Years Post-Surgery):
- Targeting the HPA Axis: Understanding the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal axis is crucial for anyone with elevated or chronic stress issues.
- Nutritional Therapy: I fixed my digestion and elimination pathways and continued to support my liver, reduce stress and support my health.
- Metabolic Health: I moved away from the plant-based diet that put me on the insulin-resistant spectrum and moved toward metabolic flexibility. Hyperinsulinemia has an impact on uterine fibroids.
Is Surgery the Only Answer?
In my case, surgery was a necessity. I was fortunate to have a skilled surgeon and a fertility specialist, who preserved my womb while removing 18 dense, fibrous balls that had sapped my energy for five years.
However, the path to surgery, and the recovery after, requires a scientific approach to nutrition. Members of the public often struggle to bridge the gap between "knowing" and "embodying" health. That is why the snake oil merchants thrive on the promise of "shrinking fibroids" without needing to provide proof.
Conclusion: Data Over Conjecture
If you have successfully shrunk your fibroids, I am genuinely interested in your data. Did you get regular imaging? Did the density change? How did you do it?
I am a scientist at heart. I believe in medical science and human nutrition and working with medical teams, taking a foundational approach to health that respects the complexity of the human body.
