Kristin’s Story:
Heavy Periods and Iron Infusions
Moving Beyond Band-Aids:
The Systematic Nutritional Approach to Heavy Periods
For years, Kristin lived in a state of exhaustion. Her heavy menstrual periods were so debilitating that they led to severe iron-deficiency anaemia, requiring time-consuming iron infusions.
Kristin didn't have uterine fibroids, but her root problem—uncontrolled, heavy bleeding and subsequent anemia—is a core issue for thousands of women in the fibroid community. She was tired of the temporary fix; she needed a solution.
As a certified Nutritional Therapist (NTP), I knew we had to stop treating the symptom (low iron) and address the systemic reason she was losing so much blood in the first place.
The Problem: A System in Chaos
When Kristin came to me, we quickly identified two major compounding problems, common in women with heavy cycles:
- Hormonal Overload: Her heavy flow was being exacerbated by an underlying issue with hormonal metabolism (similar to the Oestrogen Dominance that feeds fibroids). Her liver was under too much burden to clear excess hormones efficiently even though she was eating a "healthy diet".
- Poor digestion: Her diet, while seemingly "healthy," lacked the right balance of protein, carbohydrate and fat as well as specific nutrients needed to maximize iron absorption and minimize systemic inflammation (refer to this blog post). She was trying to supplement, but her body wasn't absorbing the nutrients effectively.
The Solution: A Systematic 3-Pillar Plan
We didn't overhaul her life overnight. We implemented an evidence-based, systematic plan that focused on three pillars of foundational support:
- Pillar 1: Targeted Liver Detoxification
We focused on reducing her liver's toxic burden. This was done by supporting her liver function through nutrition and supplementation. The goal was simple: ensure the liver had the necessary co-factors to package up and excrete excess hormones, naturally through its detoxification pathways.
- Pillar 2: Optimized Iron Absorption
We fixed the way she supplemented. She stopped taking iron with her coffee or tea. We ensured every iron dose was strategically paired with a source of Vitamin C to dramatically boost absorption. We also addressed her overall gut health to ensure she wasn't missing the necessary stomach acid to break down minerals.
- Pillar 3: Inflammation Reduction
We systematically removed the primary inflammatory foods—excess sugar and industrial seed oils—replacing them with high-quality Omega-3 rich foods (anti-inflammatory fats) and natural sources of complex carbohydrates. This reduced the overall inflammatory signaling in her body, which can contribute to heavier flow and period pain.
The Result: Stopping the Infusion Cycle
The transformation was profound. Within weeks, Kristin reported being able to keep up with her new workout regimen. She was able to shift excess weight from her mid-section, which had always been a hope of hers. Over the next three months, her periods became noticeably lighter and less draining.
The final, life-changing win was this: Kristin successfully navigated her next iron infusion with ease. She regained energy, confidence, and control over her monthly cycle simply by giving her body the systematic, targeted support it needed.
